Seasonal Transition Piece: The Cropped Sweater

Summer 2012 saw the re-emergence of the crop top, and early 2013 trends are following suit with the cropped sweater. While tunics and long, oversized sweaters have been the go-to style for the past few years, we think the cropped version is a much-needed refresher. Are you tempted to begin styling this “it” sweater into your seasonal garb?

Here are a few tips for pulling off the look the right way, along with notable fashionistas wearing the look for inspiration!

Go Casual

see jane style blogger

Cropped sweaters come in all shapes and sizes, from fitted to oversized — and even in cardigan form. We love the idea of pairing one with comfy jeans and a fun undershirt in bright colors, prints, or patterns for a casual look, much like See Jane‘s look above. Or, mix and match prints with a gingham button down and striped sweater for a winter-to-spring look. Of course, you should be mindful of your pairings; a loose top is a good match for fitted bottoms, and a fitted top is best for loose bottoms.  After all, a fitted top doesn’t exactly create a modest look when paired with skin-tight leggings — eek!

Go Bright

the day book style blogger

How boho-chic is this look from The Day Book, featuring a long maxi shirt with a basic tee and belted, cropped cardigan. Love! This look adds a fashion-forward spin to the everyday look of a casual sweater. A cropped sweater also presents the perfect opportunity for throwing on some colorful skinnies or a bright cami for a playful touch. Don’t forget to add standout spring accessories like a bubble necklace, jeweled collar, or sweet scarf.

Go Bold

diane kruger cropped sweater

While a bare midriff is hardly appropriate for chilly winter-to-spring weather, we’re all about breaking the rules — sometimes. We recommend this look for a dressier setting, such as a party or night out. If you’re opting for a cropped sweater without an undershirt, consider pairing it with high-waisted bottoms or a skirt, like Diane Kruger’s fab look above. Talk about hitting two trendy birds with one stone: a cropped sweater and black-and-white color combination! And we can’t get over her perfect handbag pairing (we have a look-alike here). Hot, hot, hot!

Tell us, do you dare wear the cropped sweater?

Francophile Fever!

Do you dream of the Eiffel Tower? Is Amélie your favorite movie? Are wine and cheese your favorite indulgences? You may be a Francophile. I know I am! France is a beautiful country, full of beautiful people, and beautiful things — including fashion. French fashion has a soft, sweet feel that is extra feminine, and let’s face it, I am just a sucker for pretty, girly things! Here are a few of my favorite things…oui, oui!

paris

First of all, who wouldn’t fall in love with a landscape like this? Fashion inspiration is already forming in my brain as I gaze at the La Grande Roue and majestic Eiffel Tower…

french fashion

L: Oh là là! This lovely lady is wearing what I envision as the epitome of French fashion. A perfectly tailored, A-line dress (a shape made known as the “most wanted silhouette in Paris” by designer Christian Dior in the 1950s), classic heels, and fancy structured handbag are a classic, ladylike look. Steal the look with this structured ladylike satchel!

R: This look combines a tailored blazer, high-waisted skirt, and neck-tied blouse — with stripes, of course! French fashion staples, stripes, and neck-adorning blouses are a go-to look for those interested in channeling their inner Francophile!

L: French ladies are known for layering in an effortlessly chic way. Channel this posh Parisian look with a knitted beret, scarf, blazer, shift dress, layered necklaces, tights, booties, and a foldover bag.

R: True Parisian elegance! Complete with the Eiffel Tower in the background, this frilly, pink beauty has a modern European style that I absolutely adore! When choosing formal wear with a French twist, remember that it’s all in the details! Look for lace, corset tops, ruffles, feathers, and hints of sparkle.

laduree macarons

Is there anything prettier than a macaron? Available in a rainbow of beautiful colors and delicious flavors, these sweet treats are readily available at specialty bakeries near you. Treat yourself to a few of these colorful cookies along with café au lait to feel the essence of a true French lifestyle!

Do you fancy France as much as we do?

How to Get a Perfect Top Knot

A few weeks ago, Molly and I attended a fashion event that focused on all the must-try trends for winter. Before sitting down for a fashion show, a hair stylist showed us how to achieve a perfect top knot! Turns out, the secret ingredient is lots of teasing! Perfectly teased and tousled hair will create a knot that’s just the right amount of messy.

Molly played model while I snapped photos of the stylist giving her a top knot. Check out how it’s done:

how to do a top knot

  1. Put your hair in a high ponytail. The stylist recommended using your fingers as a brush for a slightly undone look.
  2. Using a fine tooth comb, tease your ponytail!
  3. Form a bun by coiling your hair around the base of the ponytail. Secure with a rubber hair tie.
  4. Pin the knot in place with bobby pins.
  5. Voila! Top knots are the perfect ‘do for taking your look from daytime chic to nighttime glam.

Check out more photos from our night out, including fashion show shots, on my blog!

“The Bachelor” Bracket Challenge

It’s okay to admit it. You spent your Monday night huddled around the TV with your girlfriends, gossiping about the latest group of bachelorettes. Don’t worry, we did too. In fact, a few lucky Handbag Heaven ladies even had the opportunity to share their sacred Girl’s Night ritual with none other than Bachelorette Season 8 runner-up, Arie Luyendyk, Jr. (warning: blurry pic – but we swear it’s actually him)!

No matter who you watched it with, we think it’s safe to say The Bachelor Season 17 premiere did not disappoint.  And now that the first batch of roses has been (unconventionally) handed out, it’s time to put your  reality TV relationship instincts to the test. This season the Handbag Heaven ladies have stirred up a little friendly competition, and we’d like you to join — that is, if you’re up to the challenge.

Who do you think will win Sean’s heart and who will get the boot? Simply separate the crazies from the keepers and fill out our week-by-week bracket below before the next Monday’s episode. Then be sure to chat with us on Facebook and Twitter each Tuesday, as we discuss each moment of delectable drama. And if you’re feeling ultra-competitive — round up your girls and create a Bachelor pool of your own!

Bachelor bracket

Print >

Will the women turn on one another? Will there be tears, hot tubs, and the most dramatic rose ceremony ever? Will Sean find true love? While we’re pretty certain we can already answer these questions, we can’t wait to tune in and find out!

Scoring

Decide among your friends how you’d like to keep score or follow along with the system we’re using at Handbag Heaven!

We’ve decided to assign a point value for each week. Multiply that point value by the number of girls you’ve correctly guessed, and you’ve got your score for the round. The one with the most points at the finale wins. :) Based on our point values, a perfect bracket would result in a score of 474. Good luck!

Top 16 – 3 points

Top 13 – 5 points

Top 11 – 7 points

Top 9 – 9 points

Top 6 – 11 points

Final Four – 13 points

Final Three – 15 points

Finale – 20 points

The One – 30 points

Spoiler Alert! Tomorrow Night’s Pretty Little Liars Winter Premiere

pretty little liars

Are you ready for more Pretty Little Liars? Fans of Rosewood’s drama and suspense are counting down the hours until the winter premiere tomorrow night. I know I have many burning questions I can’t wait to see answered. When is Spencer going to discover Toby’s true colors? Why does Mr. Fitz look so suspicious? What’s up with Aria’s dad? Who trapped Aria in that crate with Garrett’s body (ew)? And why was Ali’s body on the train in the drink cooler (double ew)?

To gear up, let’s remember where we left off with Spencer, Aria, Emily, and Hanna, and take a sneak peak at what each PLL will be wearing in tomorrow night’s episode:

pretty little liars winter premier

The mid-season premier titled “She’s Better Now” will focus on how the Liars deal with Mona being released from Radley Sanitarium and attending Rosewood High. They’re skeptical if the previously evil and conniving Mona can be trusted. Each Liar has her own opinion about the new Mona.

Spencer

Spencer Hastings Clothes

Spencer’s family always seems to be at the center of Ali drama, and now her boyfriend Toby is double-crossing Spencer by working for the A-Team. In the Halloween episode, Spencer is one of the last people Garrett talks to before he dies. Garrett reveals to her that he did not kill Ali. He only pretended to kill her in front of blind Jenna, but later saw Aria’s dad Byron and Ali having an incriminating conversation. Shew!

Tomorrow night we’ll be seeing Spencer dressed as classic and classy as always in a grey cardigan, ruffled tank, green hi-low skirt, ankle-strap flats, and a watch.

Aria

aria montgomery clothes

Aria spent most of the Halloween episode trapped in a crate with Garrett’s dead body. Now, while she was definitely the victim in that situation, I’ve been hearing some pretty compelling evidence that Aria is A. (I’d love to hear your thoughts on that.) Besides that, how can we explain Ali’s late-night run-in with Aria’s dad the night she was killed? Not to mention, Aria’s boyfriend Ezra looks as guilty as all-get-out at the end of the Halloween episode. Plus, where are they going with the storyline that he has a secret son? There are some suspicious things happening in the Montgomery family.

Tomorrow night we’ll be seeing Aria looking as eclectic as ever in mixed leopard prints, stripes, a pink bag, and tall white heels.

Emily

emily fields clothes

I hope A takes it easy on Emily for the rest of the season. After Maya’s death, girlfriend drama with Paige, and nearly being killed by crazy Nate, the poor girl needs a break! But let’s be real, A doesn’t take it easy on any of them. I’m placing bets that Paige knows more about the A-Team than she lets on. I know I’m having a hard time trusting Paige. She did try to drown Emily, after all!

Emily’s style has definitely evolved over the series. She’s gone from sporty wallflower to edgy with a hint of glam. Tomorrow night Emily will be wearing a rocker tank, a moto jacket, layered necklaces, black jeans, boots, and a grey satchel.

Hanna

Hanna Marin clothes

Who else can’t get enough of Hanna and Caleb (Haleb)? Caleb always seems to be there to save the day for the girls, and I love how their storyline is playing out. But what’s up with Hanna’s mom, Ashley? They’re giving her and boyfriend Ted quite a bit of air time, especially during the Halloween episode when the little ghost girl is in Ashley’s house. Everyone who also reads the Pretty Little Liars book series can only assume that this is the ghost of Ali’s twin.

Tomorrow night, always-trendy Hanna will be wearing a blue polka dot dress, a blazer, bold jewelry, a color-block bag, and strappy heels.

What questions do you want answered during the winter premiere? I know I’ll be on the lookout for a male character with a bandaged hand.  Remember that a guy and a girl were trying to push the crate holding Garrett’s corpse and Aria off the train. Aria stabbed the guy’s hand with a screwdriver, which will surely show up bandaged tomorrow night.

pretty little liars season 3 promo

Notice the handcuffs on Aria’s ankles. Is this a sign of guilt?

Pucker Up: Your 2013 Beauty Resolutions

Welp … 2012 is officially over, and so are all of last year’s bad beauty habits. That’s right, this year we’re kicking your beauty routine into high gear — that means going a little lighter on the winged eyeliner/red lip combo, Taylor! With the help of some 2013 spring runway inspiration and a little thing we like to call our beauty conscience, here’s your list of 2013 resolutions:

1. Get Organized

Most of our resolutions involve getting organized — whether it’s finances, overstuffed closets, or beauty routines.  Keeping your makeup organized makes getting ready a breeze, and gives you more time in the morning to catch some much-needed z’s. Take a tip from NARS and organize your makeup by type. Once you’ve grouped your lipsticks, eyeshadows, glosses, primers, brushes, etc. together, be sure to store them in a way that suits you. We’re obsessed with our over-the-door Cosmetic Bags here at HH (they have so many awesome compartments!), and we love this Pin-spiration, too.

2. Be More Daring

This year, vow to be a little more daring with your beauty routine. You can interpret this any way you want — just as long as you step out of your comfort zone a little bit! Baffled by how to use a lash curler? Head to Sephora and ask them to teach you! Always wanted to try the uber-popular bright lip trend? Go ahead, swipe some on! Dreaming of changing your hair color as often as Emma Stone? Make 2013 your year of ‘do switcheroos! After all, you never know until you try, and you might be pleasantly surprised.

3. Keep it Simple

2013 spring runways boasted an “enhanced minimalism” when it came to makeup. To everyone else, this just means: keep it simple! Instead of caking on that blush, tracing under your eyelids one time too many, or gluing on those fake lashes, try to refer back to the basics. Highlighting your features with just a hint of foundation, blush, highlighter, mascara, and gloss shows off your natural beauty! Just remember: a little goes a long way.

4. Grow Brows, Grow!

No more pencil-thin brows! We know how pesky those strays can be, but please no over-plucking this year, okay? Spring 2013 runways were jam-packed with big browed beauties, and It Girls like Cara Delevingne are proof that thick is beyond beautiful. Plus, bushier brows accentuate your gorgeous eyes and brighten your face. Ask your stylist how you two can work together to grow yours out this year.

5. Go Faux

It’s January, but you’re already thinking about going to the tanning bed for that gorgeous spring break glow. BUT WAIT JUST ONE MINUTE. First things first, swipe the words “tanning bed” from your beauty vocabulary completely. It’s horrible for you (bulbs boosts your risk of melanoma by 75 percent) and it prematurely ages you, too. In 2013, be good to your skin and your future self by turning to faux self tanners. Our favorites of the moment are anything by Jergens, and if you’re looking to splurge, try hitting up the department stores at your local mall. We love anything by Dior and Clinique.

6. Master the Updo

Lucky for your morning routine, updos are here to stay! For those of you who shy away from anything fancier than a ponytail, you’re seriously missing out! The Beauty Department has amazing tutorials for you to try, and they’re so easy that even Snooki could do them. A few of our favorites for 2013 include the milkmaid braids, the ’50s pony, and the twist-flip bun. Don’t forget to grab a fine-toothed comb for teasing, along with lots of bobbies for defying gravity!

7. Protect & Nourish

If there’s one beauty resolution you make this year, let it be to protect and nourish your skin. Your skin is your most important feature, so be sure to treat it right — starting with SPF. Always, always apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection with at least 30 SPF. That’s right — 30 SPF! Don’t skimp on the coverage or assume that your makeup has SPF. Also, make sure you know how to care for your skin properly using the right washes, moisturizers, and makeup. We are obsessed with this infographic featuring four steps to healthy, radiant skin.

Cheers to a beautiful you in the new year!
