Weekly Blogosphere Roundup

Fashion News: This Weeks Best Style Blog PostsNever Have I Ever. Do you ever say never in your dressing philosophy? I have a vendetta against capris, for example. I’m not particularly gifted in stature and I think they make me look like a preteen. I can’t imagine coming across a desirable pair; I say never. Jenine at The Coveted says never to never, however. (three times fast..go!) Check out her clogs.

Foundation. This week, Lauren made a list of wardrobe necessities. She also vows to lay off purchasing accessories until the list of conquered. This is great lesson for us accessories-driven. When choosing between a fancy, embellishment-ridden frock and a simple-but-practical one, I have a habit of going for the former. I like shiny things.

Snobbery. Fashion in My Eyes delves into shoppers’ relationships with labels – people’s aversion to buying items with a lack of exoticness, to straying from the expensive, to diffusion lines. It’s in interesting thing what a little piece of paper or cloth can do to the psyche.

Week of Chic. I definitely do my thing in the vintage department; I’d say my closet consists of 1:4 ratio of vintage versus contemporary pieces, which is pretty respectable considering our current era of fast fashion (and the size of my closet). Style Symmetry is challenging her readers to dress in 100% vintage for five days straight. Just the preposition is quite inspiring. Could you do it?

Have a fierce weekend.

Someone Paid $42,500 to Hang Around at Vogue

Since Thursday, April 8 fashion wannabes/lovers have had the chance to bid on a week-long hang out sesh at the Vogue office in NYC.

From the auction website:

anna wintour in her vogue officeAnna Wintour, the legendary editor of the world’s recognized fashion authority,Vogue, has joined the cause to help benefit the RFK Center by donating a priceless week-long experience at the revered magazine. Tailored to the individual interests and skill set of the auction winner, the week at Vogue will be as fascinating as it is informative.

On Tuesday the bidding had reached an exorbitant 13,000, and today ended at $42,500. Let me repeat, forty two thousand five hundred dollars.

I find it hard to believe that Anna would be down for entertaining a random muggle for a whole week, and thus assume this deep pocketed lad or laddess will report to one of her minions a good portion of the time. To me, this sounds like an glorified internship minus the coffee fetching, but whatev’.

The site says the estimated value of the “prize” is $10,000. Not so sure where they came up with this number, but perhaps it’s some derivative of the “time is money” adage. If Anna takes five minutes to speak with the winner everyday for a business week, that’s 25 less minutes she can be the Pope of fashion, which somehow boils down to a decreased number of cerulean blouses being fished out of Casual Corner clearance bins five to ten years in the future. Pure. Logic.

What do you think?

Handbag Repairs: List of Available Purse Fixes

damaged ripped handbag strap So your beloved handbag is broken, and you’re faced with the eternal (alright, maybe not eternal but super hard and big) quandary: Do you throw your handbag away like that pair of favorite socks that are so awesome but have so many holes that their actual function is null and void…

OR do you get it repaired thus breathing life back into this dear friend wrought with battle wounds. (By “battle wounds” I mean something along that lines of shutting your car door on the handle thus ripping the strap into oblivion as you turned to leave. That hasn’t happen to you, you say? Lies.)

I, as usual, I’m here to help. Following is a list of the types of repair jobs most repair shops can perform. Use this to determine whether it’s time to resuscitate or put it to rest.

  • cleaning
  • stain removal
  • leather reconditioning
  • deodorizing
  • zipper replacement or installation
  • adjusting or replacing the strap
  • lining replacement, reshaping
  • gluing torn parts
  • mending stitches
  • handle replacement or reconstruction
  • gold and nickel plating for parts
  • parts replacement for buckles
  • magnets replacement
  • elastic replacement
  • corner covering

Celeb Style: Rhianna’s Python Satchel

Celebrity Fashion: Rhianna's Python Satchel Handbag

Check it out…Rhianna lookin’ the part of a true playa’.  Love it it all…

BUT love the bag the most (obvi).

My expertise tells me that you can pull off a similar look with our Brooklyn Bubble Satchel.  This wonderfully sized handbag is covered in an exotic python print on the frontside that truly looks like real snake-skin. The back of the satchel is covered in a solid black leatherette., so you really get two looks for the price of one. This bag is something you won’t want to share…though I guarantee if your family is anything like mine, that sis of yours will be wanting to borrow this baby the moment she lays eyes on it.

P.S. It’s only $39.95.  Go.

New Merch’ Monday: Dallas Denim Tote

denim brown leather jean tote bag

Dallas Denim Tote

Woodstock.  Think of the bag you would bring to Woodstock.  Oh, you can’t think of one?  Good thing I’m a problem-solver.

Oh, you don’t know what Woodstock is?  Well, I’m no miracle-worker, child.

For those of you who know about the radical musical gathering of days passed, I present the Dallas Denim Tote.  The Dallas is magical for a number of reasons.  I’ll list them.

1. Denim. Okay, this one is obvious.  It’s made of denim, which is not only durable and worry-free, it is hugely en vogue lately.  This is the kind of bag you can schlep anywhere; from the beach to campus to a weekend trip in the mountains.  It’s meant to get a bit roughed-up, but let’s not pretend it won’t like it a little.

2. Detailing. Because of their shape, totes need plenty of details to keep the eye interested.  The Dallas has simple, but well-mixed embellishments, making for a more fun bag that doesn’t look too huge-tote-ish.  Everyone loves zippers, and the fun, vertical zips striping this bag are a cool way to add texture to it, without the dreaded patchwork denim look.  Also, the major rolled pleats/gatherings on each side of the bag are different, again, creating interest in what could otherwise just be a sea of denim.

3. Magnitute. This isn’t the biggest bag I’ve seen, but it certainly holds its ground.  As I said above, the Dallas can be toted along on many different kinds of outings, but not just because of its material.  The size of this bag is gloriously giant, allowing for many a necessity to be schlepped.  I’m sure, if you wanted, you could probably get an extra pair of boots in there, cowgirl.

4. Over-all Demeanor. I don’t mean “over-all” like the type of clothing, I mean just the general vibe of the Dallas.  It’s a chill one, making the bag a definite refresher from most of the bags we see every day.

Definitely give the Dallas Denim Tote a shot.  Who knows?  You may end up finding yourself at random, outdoor music festivals, somehow.  And everyone loves music, so it’s a good situation no matter what!  (problem-solver.)

Weekly Blogosphere Roundup

At the finish line of this week, we have several rad things on which to report.  Impressed, I am, by how quickly the weeks seem to go by as soon as the sun comes out.  Onward.

Talon. As I often state, I do big jewelry to make my appendages look smaller in comparison.  No shame.  I found a rad blog written by a sassy Brit (as far as I can tell, at least.  She uses “bloody,” a word I would die to use without causing eyes to roll, and refers to herself as a Queen–how very UK–and seems to deserve it, what with her fearless looks and raw self-portraits), and I had to calm my heart after finding her recent ring acquisition.

Sasquatch. I found him.  He has been killed, skinned, and discarded, his fur re-purposed into not a rug but a Chanel fur. suit. I’d be so ticked if I was Miss Furrowed Brow and I had gone without food for three weeks to look perfect for my first Chanel runway show, and they hand me THAT backstage.

Let’s Talk about Pants, Bay-bee.

I heard a whisper about ankles being given a break from hyper-skinny jeans soon.  Mary-Kate was snapped in some relaxed flare-ish denim, while Ashley was recently featured (though it is an old photo) in her skinnies.  Both look amazing, of course.  But I’m pretty happy to know my Hercules calves will soon be back in style in my go-to boot-cuts.

While we have seen some pretty varying pant styles as of late, it is interesting to see some of the possible evolutions–or de-evolution of things like overalls or even Lederhosen.  I don’t think it will be all bad.

Let’s Talk about You and Me.  (Or Just Me.)

Here at Handbag Heaven, we actually have several sister stores dedicated to giving you great style at great prices, and I totally sound like an advertisement right now.  But I can’t help it.  It’s what we do.

Our girl Jennifer over at The Looks for Less is kind of a rockstar, and she featured three of our stores in one of her Celebrity Look for Less posts.  We love her, and we love Nicole Richie, so we are basically head-ova-heels in love withthis post.

Rep’ it!

Also, check out Jennifer talking about some of our handbags in her latest haul video.  Don’t even pretend like haul videos aren’t completely addictive:

Celeb Style: Katherine Heigl’s Ruffled Tote Bag

katherine heigl tan ruffled tote handbag

Hey Kat! Lookin’ good…by the way where’d ya get your bag? Oh well, it’s probably much too expensive for my budget these days anyway…love the look though!

I’m gonna stick to a similar look for less.  The Ashley Petal Satchel actually appeals to me more, if you can believe that.  Katherine’s bag looks almost too big — this coming from a girl who basically totes a small suitcase on a daily basis.  But really, imagine digging for something in that bag. No no no.

The Ashley is covered in an exotic, animal-friendly leatherette and comes in your choice of green or tan, both of which are adorned with petal-like flower detailing along the front side of the bag.  Tons of pockets on the inside aid in organization purposes, so so digging necessary — and all this for only $57.95.

Sorry Kat!

Is Your Mom’s Style Sexy?

Upon coming across post-pregnancy shots of Gisele  last week, I found myself wondering if motherhood elicits a departure from physical sexuality. In other words, should all moms dress like third grade teachers, complete with baggy sweater vests, pleated khakis and chunky loafers with one inch heels? Or is it appropriate for moms of the world to show some skin a la our dear Gisele over there?

gisele in herve leger post-pregnancy Some might argue that it depends on the mom. If she runs in a circle of women that routinely dress scantily, it seem more likely that sexy style would become her norm.

Or perhaps it’s an age thing. If she’s a relatively young, like Jessica Alba for instance, her closet might still be stocked tight dresses and short shorts. Also, physically, this mom might not fit the matriarch stereotype.

It also might depend on the level of sexy she puts forth. If she’s showing some leg, but the chest isn’t bare, perhaps the sexiness isn’t so noticeable. If she’s wearing Hervé to a PTA meeting however, this could stir some talk.

Despite the first sentence of this post, I do want to make a distinction between sexy and stylish. The words definitely aren’t synonymous; one can be plenty stylish without looking in need of a sweater.

My mom? I think I can safely say my mom is not the sexy type. And it would probably make me a bit uncomfortable if she were, to be quite honest.

Does your mom ever dress in a sexy way? What do you think of it? Also, I’d love to hear your two cents, moms out there.
