What Makes an Eco-Friendly Handbag?

Eco-friendly bag made from recycled materialThese days green is the color on everyone’s mind. Protecting our planet is becoming a priority, from hybrid cars to energy-saving appliances and handbag production is no exception. Even the cast of Sex and the City 2 is getting in on the action!

What does it mean to be green?
Living green means taking the environment into consideration on a daily basis. There are numerous ways you can go green and help reduce the damage we are causing to the earth. It can be as easy as saving paper by setting up your printer to print double-sided or buying an eco-friendly handbag. The ways to go green are endless.

What makes a handbag eco-friendly?
Eco-friendly handbags are ones that cause minimal or no harm to the environment in their creation. This includes bags made from organic cotton and recycled materials.

What is a vegan handbag?
A bag is considered vegan if there were absolutely no animal products used in its construction. This means no suede, wool, silk or leather, but it also means no animal-based or tested glues. Vegan handbags are made from alternative animal-friendly, cruelty-free materials.

Vegan Clutch

The Columbus Clutch is a vegan option from Handbag Heaven

What are some examples of vegan materials?

  • Organic fabrics, such as cotton
  • Straw
  • Microfibers
  • Pleather
  • Recycled PET

How can I be green with my bag usage?
Purchasing an eco-friendly or vegan bag is a great way to start but why stop there? Bring your own bags to the grocery store to cut down on the usage of paper and plastic bags.

Choosing Handbags to Match Body Types

matching handbags to body typesWe all know that your handbag can make or break an outfit. But did you know that a handbag can also make or break the way you look. When choosing a handbag, it is important to be sure that it is proportional to your body. Depending on your handbag’s shape, size or where it falls you could add or shed pounds from your look. A great thing the bag with the right proportion and placement can do is draw attention to your assets and take attention off of places you wouldn’t want someone to give attention.

For people with short frames, you’ll want a long, lanky bag to provide height. Oversized totes are going to make you look shorter!

Tall and thin frames, you will want something opposite your figure and slouchy such as Hobo style bags.

For larger frames, don’t carry itty bitty handbags. These will end up making you look larger. Medium to larger sized handbags are going to suit you best.

Trying to cover up those hips or a tummy? Choose a bag that will fall at the upper torso, just under your arm. If your handbag is falling around your middle, that is where eyes will be drawn.

General rule of thumb: Always choose a handbag opposite your body type. (Like if you’re a stick figure, go for a rounded handbag.)

Most importantly of all though, it’s important that you feel confident while wearing your handbag. Try it on. Look at it in a full length mirror. Make sure that your handbag is right for you. When you are confident with your handbag, you will then become more confident in your whole outfit and this will result in you being a more confident person. More important than looking good is feeling good, so take my advice and wear those handbags with pride!

Caring for Your Leather Handbag

Owning a leather handbag is just like owning a pet. It’s a responsibility, an investment and a commitment. And just like you should clean your fish tank but shouldn’t feed your dog chocolate, there are certain things you should and shouldn’t do when caring for your leather handbag.

  • Do apply a protective spray before using the bag
  • Do wash your hands before cleaning your bag so that the leather doesn’t absorb the oils in your skin
  • Don’t use water. Water may leave stains and cause the bag to mildew
  • Katy Perry's leather handbagDo test the cleaner on a small area before cleaning the entire bag. This allows you to see how the cleaner affects the leather before applying it to the entire surface
  • Do clean the entire bag. Apply the cleaner with a white cloth in a circular motion. Then wipe with a damp cloth
  • Don’t use a cloth that is too damp because the leather will soak up the excess water
  • Don’t apply a leather conditioner to suede or patent bags
  • Do keep cosmetics, pens and other leak-prone items in a separate pouch or bag to ensure they don’t damage the leather
  • Do treat stains immediately after they occur. For organic stains, try applying crushed white chalk to the area and allow it to sit over night before wiping away with a cloth
  • Don’t let water soak into the leather. If your bag does get wet, use a towel to absorb as much of the water as possible and then allow it air dry
  • Don’t use a blow dryer or other heat source to dry the bag
  • Do store your leather bag in a cool, dark and dry location. Too much moisture in the air can cause the leather to mildew and too much light may cause the leather to fade
  • Don’t store your bag in plastic because the chemicals may harm the leather. Opt for a natural material instead. Pillowcases are a great, breathable storage option
  • Do use a leather cleaner on your bag twice a year to keep it looking its best

How To Organize Your Handbag

Julie Andrews in Mary PoppinsMary Poppins has been an idol of mine since I was a little girl. Think about it: the woman could sing and fly. Not to mention, she was practically perfect in every way. I always dreamed that one day I would grow up to be just like her.

Flash forward 15 years: I still can’t fly, or even really sing (I blame my dad’s side of the family for that genetic flaw) but I can pull obscure item after item out of my purse. However, I can’t really count this as a victory. While Mary Poppins pulled lamps out of her bag to amuse the Banks children, I find myself pulling my hair out because I can’t find what I’m looking for.

Luckily for me, there is a cure for MPBS (Mary Poppins bag syndrome). All you need is a spoonful or sugar. Oh, and these 10 steps…

  1. Clean slate. Start by dumping the contents of your bag out onto a flat surface.
  2. Garbage day. Sift through all of your belongings and throw away the wrappers, receipts, and other trash you no longer need.
  3. Take it to the bank. Collect all of the loose change you find either in a jar or a coinpurse.
  4. Drop the dead weight. Go through your wallet and remove any coupons, receipts, old cards and excess change you don’t need to carry around with you.
  5. You can organize your bag in ten easy stepsReceipt with you or in the bag? Use an envelope or ziplock bag to store receipts that you do need to keep.
  6. Bare necessities. Separate the remaining items into two piles:  one for things you use on a daily basis, and one for things you only use on occasion.
  7. Just in case. Make sure that fragile items, such as cameras and sunglasses, are stored in a case to prevent any damage.
  8. Downsize the makeup. Rather than bringing an entire makeup counter with you, limit your cosmetics to items you actually need. Also, consider downsizing to travel containers to save space.
  9. It’s in the bag. Group your items and find them a home. Side pockets are perfect for items you need quick access to, like cell phones and keys. And brightly covered bags, such as the 5-Piece Cosmetic Bag Set, are a great option for cosmetics because they’re easy to spot.
  10. Scheduled maintenance. Take five minutes each week to weed out any unnecessary items that worked their way into your bag and you’ll never face MPBS again!

Now that you’re free from the clutter, what’s the strangest thing you found while cleaning out your bag?

Celeb Style: Alba, Lohan and Heigl

Photo: Xomba.com

Who doesn’t love a little Jessica Alba? Or Lindsay Lohan? Or Katherine Heigl?

  • Jessica, the recent Valentine’s Day star is due to release a film this month and one again in September and December.
  • Lindsay is reaching for her comeback, SCRAM bracelet and all!
  • Katherine is going big with Ashton Kutcher in Killers.

But more importantly, who doesn’t LOVE PURPLE? (Random, indeed.) Celebrities definitely know what’s up when it comes to fashion and Jessica, Lindsay and Katherine are shoe-ins when it comes to being fashion forward, and recently, purple is their thing…

So no worries ladies! I am here to introduce you to three similar purple handbags that are sure to go hand-in-hand with your desire for the newest celebrity handbag craze:

Ribbon Shoulder Tote – If you are looking for that nice neutral bag to sit on your shoulder, serve its purpose and gain no extra attention, then this tote is NOT for you. Our outspoken hobo-like tote is decorated with a large bow in a glossy patent leatherette. Darned with polished silver hardware, this tote gives your wardrobe a bit of an edge.

Eden Exotic Hobo – Who doesn’t love a handbag makeover?! Check out this hobo and brighten up your tired wardrobe. The exterior of this great handbag is covered in a mixture of exotic patent leatherette, patches of suede-like goodness and soft and smooth solid colored leatherette. The extra wide top hobo handle is adorned with a belted bracelet for a little extra rock ‘n’ roll.

Vixen Stud Satchel – This satchel is not for the faint at heart. This very sexy bag highlights golden studs throughout the handbag and boasts embossed leatherette. There are two side pockets and back zippered pocket that allow you to stash your small personal items for quick access, and  longer double handles fit perfectly in your hand or slightly snug on your shoulder.

Cue fashion, cue function, go PURPLE! The celebs are doing it, shouldn’t you?!

In Your Handbag: The Bare Essentials

Handbag Heaven: Carrington Flower Satchel handbag

Carrington Flower Satchel

Are you envious of that girl who comes to work every day donning a new handbag? The one who seems to be able to coordinate her bag to her outfit on the daily? Me too. I just don’t have time for such nonsense amazingness. Switching out bags would take me forever – though that could be a result of the amount of things in my bag….

Currently:

  • Two wallets – why? I don’t know.
  • Keys
  • Three pens, eight pencils and one highlighter – I’m serious.
  • Receipts, galore!
  • A scarf
  • Two ID holders
  • Chapstick
  • Clean & Clear oil absorbing sheets
  • Ear plugs
  • Sunglasses
  • Headphones
  • Airborne and Zicam – girl don’t get sick ;)
  • Coupons
  • Checkbook
  • Three old to-do lists
  • Candy wrappers
  • Gauze

I’m stopping there; I know you don’t have all day. I have all of that and not even all the essentials. It would be much easier to switch purses if I carried only the essentials. So here I go, a new and improved list – what should be in every girl’s purse.

  • Wallet
  • Keys
  • Chapstick
  • Checkbook
  • Two pens at the most
  • Sunglasses in a case
  • Any prescription pills that you take daily and pain relievers
  • Tissues
  • The electronics: phone, camera and Ipod
  • Gum or mints
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Tampons or pads
  • A small first aid kit
  • A light snack

That should be enough to get you through the day. Don’t be like me and lug around all the extras you don’t need. Who knows what damage I could be doing to my back and shoulders! When you carry only the essentials, changing out purses will be a lot easier. Do you have any purse essentials that I forgot?

For more, check out our content page, in which our staff tells what they keep in their purses or if you’re purse is a huge mess like mine, check out our blog on purse organization. Have a good day ladies and carry those handbags proudly!

The Great Man-Bag Debate

America, meet the man-bag. Also known as the man purse, murse, messenger bag or satchel. A descendant of the handbag, the man-bag is a growing breed, originating in Europe. Recently the man-bag population migrated to the United States in search of a better life. Instead they found themselves the butt of jokes and the subject of intense debate.

According to those in the pro man-bag camp, modern man has more belongings than his pockets can hold. The briefcase is outdated and the backpack clashes with his neatly pressed suit. He needed a place to store his cell phone, wallet, keys, sunglasses and iPod. Thus, the man-bag was born.

Naysayers argue that the man-bag is nothing more than a woman’s purse, carried by a man. They find the idea of such a bag embarrassing. But if this is the case how do you explain its prevalence in the media alongside some of America’s manliest heros?

The man bag in television and film

1977: Star Wars hits the big screen featuring a Wookie named Chewbacca and his man-bag
1999: Rachel helps Joey pick out the perfect bag the Friends episode titled, The One With Joey’s Bag
1981: Indiana Jones sports a satchel in Raiders of the Lost Ark
2001: The hit drama 24 debuts, giving America a new messenger bag-carrying hero by the name of Jack Bauer
2009: Alan Garner proudly wears a man-bag on his quest to find his friend, Doug, in The Hangover
2009: Fosters launches a commercial, which educates the public on the Australian version of a man purse

Male celebs wear the man bag too

Whether you love it or hate it, it appears as though the man-bag is here to stay. As more and more male celebrities are seen running errands and attending award shows with their own bag in tow, the phenomenon continues to grow. Where do you stand on the great man-bag debate? It it hot or absolutely not?

1940′s Handbag Trends

Before Britney, Star Wars and even the Beatles, there was a time when Casablanca filled the silver screen, swing music was in and George Orwell was predicting the future. Female fashion was dominated by austere clothing, big curls and red lipstick. Let’s take a trip back in time to get a closer look at handbag fashion in the 1940s…

Handbag collection for a 1940s Sears catalogue The fashion of the 1940s was marked by the ongoing Second World War. Materials commonly used in handbag production, such as zippers and leather, were instead directed to production of supplies for the war effort. As a result, designers turned to wood, plastic and other synthetic materials.

In addition to the changing materials, handbags were also changing shape. Bags became more rectangular and sharp in appearance. This look served as a reflection of the new level of independence experienced by women as they entered the workforce during the war.

Wicker was one of the new materials used for purses in the 1940sAs WWII came to a close, new materials and processes developed during the war began to be used in handbag production. These advances allowed bags to be produced more quickly and for a lower cost, resulting in their spreading popularity.

As demand increased, handbags saw a “return to fashion.” Beading and other embellishments became more common and leather was once again introduced. Bamboo and straw were the new materials of the day, taking on unique shapes like the birdcage. Bags continued to become boxier in appearance and the military influence of WWII could still be seen through gold chains and insignias at the beginning of the 1950s.

Too Many Handbags; Too Few Closets

Hey, handbag lovers everywhere! Do you have a handbag in every color? How about day bags and night bags? Totes and clutches? You’ve got the purse you like to take to the lake, the one that’s big enough to stuff some books in when going to classes and the one you wear out at night but you can only fit the necessities into: cell phone, wallet, keys and chap-stick. Yes, despite what your boyfriend might tell you, having this many bags IS necessary. You never know what occasion might arise and you need to be prepared. But where do you put them all? We don’t all have closets like Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City, so here are some space efficient ways to store your handbags.

  • Do you have extra luggage? That stuff takes up some room. But how about being efficient and putting some purses inside your luggage? This will keep your purses safe and clean. Also, be sure to stuff some tissue paper in that bag before storing it away so that it keeps its shape.
  • Buying hooks for your closet wall is also an option. You can hang them up and then in the morning when you go to find the right purse to match your outfit, your options will be hanging. However, this isn’t the best option and I would do this for totes and messenger bags, but not those designer handbags since it could provide strain on the strap.
  • Do you have any extra shelves? Lining them up on a shelf is a very good way to store handbags. If you don’t have extra shelf space though, a canvas hanging shelf can be bought at an affordable price.
  • You could also stash those bags in your drawers. Three-drawer carts can be purchased for less than  $20. This would be an optimal place for clutches or smaller bags. You can just line them up in the drawers.
  • Sort by color. You know those Matryoshka dolls. Where you take apart one doll and there’s a smaller one inside; and this continues until you have a set of dolls ranging in size? Picture this: your biggest red bag with a smaller red bag inside and then a smaller one and then a clutch! All you have to do is know the color bag you want and then you’ll know exactly where it is! You could also sort them by season or size and put them in plastic totes that can be put under your bed or in the top of your closet.

For more information on handbag storage, see our content page about maintaining your purse’s condition while in storage.

http://www.handbagheaven.com/blog/handbag-storage-how-to-maintain-your-purses-condition/3146/

I hope you found these hints helpful for those of you who aren’t blessed with ginormous amounts of closet space. How do you store your handbags? Are there any space efficient ways I didn’t mention?
